Well folks, just when you thought Jennifer Garner had explored every rom-com scenario possible, she’s now tackling the world’s least romantic topic: cryptocurrency. Netflix just announced Garner will star in “One Attempt Remaining,” a rom-com where love meets digital currency. Because nothing says “I love you” like blockchain verification.
The streaming giant is billing this as their first cryptocurrency-themed romantic comedy. Which begs the question: was anyone actually asking for this mashup? It’s like Netflix executives threw darts at a board labeled “Things Millennials Like” and decided to combine the results.
Garner plays a tech-challenged woman who inherits a crypto fortune with a catch—she can only access it by remembering the password. One wrong guess and poof, millions gone. I’m getting anxiety just thinking about it, considering I have to reset my Hulu password every three days.
The film pairs Garner with rom-com veteran Mark Ruffalo, reuniting the “13 Going on 30” duo after nearly two decades. They’ve gone from wishing they were thirty, flirty, and thriving to just trying to remember a password. If that’s not a perfect metaphor for aging, I don’t know what is.
“I loved the script because it makes something intimidating like cryptocurrency accessible and funny,” Garner told Variety in an exclusive statement. Sure, Jen. Next you’ll be explaining NFTs through interpretive dance. Actually, I might watch that.
Netflix is betting big on this quirky premise hitting the sweet spot between finance bros and rom-com enthusiasts. That Venn diagram must be… interesting. Director Emma Sullivan describes it as “When Harry Met Sally meets The Social Network,” which sounds like what would happen if Nora Ephron had a LinkedIn account.
Production starts this fall in Austin, Texas, which has apparently rebranded itself from “live music capital” to “crypto bro headquarters.” The city’s tech scene will serve as backdrop to Garner’s character’s journey from digital novice to crypto queen.
Netflix’s head of original films, Marcus Jones, claims the project “captures the zeitgeist while delivering heartfelt comedy.” Translation: “We’re desperately trying to make cryptocurrency seem fun and relatable.” Good luck with that, Marcus.
The supporting cast includes Awkwafina as a tech genius neighbor and Stanley Tucci as Garner’s crypto-obsessed uncle. Because nothing says “legitimacy” like Stanley Tucci explaining Bitcoin over dinner. I’d actually pay to see that part.
“One Attempt Remaining” drops on Netflix summer 2025, giving you plenty of time to learn what cryptocurrency actually is before watching. Or, like me, you can just nod knowingly while secretly having no clue what a blockchain does.
The real question: will this movie age well, or will it feel as dated as “You’ve Got Mail” by the time it premieres? Either way, I’m tuning in to watch Jennifer Garner frantically trying to guess a password for two hours. It’s basically my daily life, but with better lighting and actually valuable stakes.
