The promise of technology to transform how law enforcement addresses violence against women has taken center stage in London, as the Metropolitan Police rolls out a suite of digital tools aimed at identifying potential offenders before they can harm potential victims.

The Met’s initiative, which leverages data analytics and artificial intelligence, represents a significant shift in policing strategy—moving from reactive response to proactive prevention. Having covered numerous tech implementations in public safety, I’m struck by both the potential and the complexity of this approach.

According to the Independent, the new system analyzes patterns from existing police records to flag individuals who might pose threats to women and girls. It’s essentially a predictive model that sorts through the digital haystack to find concerning needles before they cause harm.

“This technology allows officers to identify potential perpetrators who may have slipped through traditional detection methods,” explains Dr. Sarah Martinez, a digital criminology expert I spoke with at last month’s Public Safety Tech Summit. “But the effectiveness hinges entirely on the quality of the historical data and the algorithms designed to interpret it.”

The Met acknowledges these concerns and claims to have built safeguards into its system. They emphasize that the technology serves only as a starting point for investigation, not as the sole determinant for action.

From my perspective, having witnessed various iterations of predictive policing, the potential benefits are significant. Women facing stalking, harassment, or domestic violence often report feeling that law enforcement only becomes involved after harm has occurred. A system that enables earlier intervention could save lives.

However, the implementation details matter tremendously. How officers use this information, what oversight exists, and whether the system continuously improves based on outcomes will determine whether this represents genuine progress or problematic overreach.

The Met’s approach also raises questions about resources. Technology might identify concerning patterns, but effective intervention requires trained officers with time to follow up on these leads. Without adequate staffing and proper training on trauma-informed approaches, even the best technology will fall short.

As we move deeper into the era of algorithmic policing, the balance between public safety and civil liberties becomes increasingly complex. The Met’s initiative deserves close attention not just for its immediate impact on women’s safety in London, but as a case study in how modern policing navigates these challenging waters.

For women’s advocacy groups, the reception has been cautiously optimistic. “We welcome any tools that help prevent violence,” says Elizabeth Taylor of Women’s Safety Now. “But technology alone isn’t the answer—it must be part of a comprehensive approach that includes education, support services, and cultural change.”

As this program unfolds, its success will ultimately be measured not by the sophistication of its algorithms, but by whether fewer women experience violence. That metric, unlike the technology itself, is refreshingly straightforward.
