“The demand signals we’re seeing from Asian enterprises are frankly unprecedented,” Albin told Bloomberg from Groq’s newly established Singapore office. “We’re talking about 300% year-over-year growth in inquiries from financial services, manufacturing, and telecom sectors specifically.”
This expansion comes at a pivotal moment for the AI infrastructure landscape. According to recent IDC data, the APAC AI chipset market is projected to reach $21.7 billion by 2027, representing a compound annual growth rate of 26.9% – significantly outpacing global averages.
Groq, known for its innovative Language Processing Units (LPUs) that dramatically accelerate large language model inference, appears to be capitalizing on this growth through a hybrid strategy. The company is simultaneously expanding its cloud services footprint while establishing strategic hardware partnerships with regional tech manufacturers.
“We’re seeing the competitive dynamic shift from pure performance metrics to total cost of ownership and energy efficiency,” explained Albin. “When you can run a complex inferencing workload at 30 times the speed while consuming a fraction of the energy, that’s when the CFO and the sustainability officer both become your champions.”

Singapore-based DBS Bank represents an interesting case study in Groq’s regional strategy. The financial institution recently completed a six-month pilot deploying Groq’s inference solutions for real-time fraud detection and natural language processing applications. According to internal benchmarks shared with investors, DBS reported a 42% reduction in inference costs and 67% improvement in response times for critical customer-facing AI services.
The expansion isn’t without challenges, however. Persistent supply chain constraints continue to impact hardware availability across the semiconductor industry. When pressed on delivery timelines, Albin acknowledged the reality while highlighting Groq’s mitigation approach.

Energy consumption remains another critical consideration. With data centers already consuming approximately 1-2% of global electricity, the AI infrastructure boom threatens to dramatically increase that footprint. Groq’s emphasis on energy efficiency appears strategically aligned with growing regulatory and market pressures across Asian economies.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s recent data center energy efficiency standards, among the world’s strictest, exemplify this trend. Groq claims its architecture delivers up to 5x better inference performance per watt compared to conventional GPU-based solutions – a claim that, if substantiated at scale, could represent a significant competitive advantage in energy-conscious markets.
What remains less clear is Groq’s long-term positioning against not just NVIDIA, but emerging domestic champions across Asian markets. Particularly in China, companies like Cambricon and Biren Technology are developing increasingly sophisticated AI accelerators with strong government backing.
For now, Groq appears focused on execution rather than competition. The company’s recent $630 million funding round, led by prominent venture firms including addition and Tiger Global, provides substantial runway for this expansion strategy.
“We’re building for the long-term,” concluded Albin. “The AI infrastructure landscape will continue evolving rapidly, but the fundamental need for efficient, predictable compute at scale is here to stay.”
